Will Cuba hold free and competitive national elections before December 31, 2027?

This market resolves YES if Cuba conducts nationwide elections for top national offices (e.g., President, National Assembly) before the end of 2027 that meet internationally recognized standards for free and fair elections.

✅ To count as free and competitive, the election must include:

  • Multiple political parties or independent candidates legally allowed to run

  • Meaningful opposition participation, not restricted to regime-approved candidates

  • Secret ballots with universal adult suffrage

  • Independent or credible international election observers (e.g., UN, OAS, EU, Carter Center) reporting no systematic fraud

  • Freedom of expression and assembly during the campaign period (no mass repression of candidates, activists, or voters)

❌ This market resolves NO if:

  • Elections are held under the current one-party system (Communist Party monopoly)

  • Candidates are filtered or approved by state-controlled bodies

  • Voting occurs without genuine opposition or under coercive conditions

  • Elections are postponed beyond December 31, 2027

  • The government claims elections are “democratic” but reputable international observers disagree

📰 Resolution sources:

  • Reports from major international media (Reuters, AP, BBC)

  • Statements or reports from recognized election monitoring organizations

  • Assessments by reputable human rights organizations (Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International)

📌 Notes:

  • Constitutional reforms or promises of future elections do not count unless an actual qualifying election occurs before the deadline.

  • Local or municipal elections alone are insufficient; the election must be national in scope.

🔎 Background (context for traders)

Cuba has been governed by a one-party communist system since 1959. While elections are held regularly, they have not been considered free or competitive by international standards, as opposition parties are illegal and political dissent is tightly controlled. Any shift toward genuinely free elections would likely follow major political, economic, or social upheaval, making this market highly sensitive to regime stability, protest dynamics, and international pressure.

Happy Sunday y'all!
Small protests have been reported in several parts of Havana on March 6–7. Most appear to be "cacerolazos" (people banging pots and pans) and involve relatively small groups, roughly 10–50 participants in the available videos. Protesters are reportedly chanting about food shortages and electricity outages, while in some clips participants can also be heard calling for “libertad” (freedom)

Personal Opinion: This to me feels a bit like a make or break moment. If the feeling of being fed up outweighs the fear of repression -and if conditions remain this same- this will snowball.
Back in July 2021 (11J) mass protests ocurred all over the country (100+ participants and prolonged over weeks) with Covid conditions that weren't as bad as what we are seeing now. If these protests pick up the pace they could reach or suprass what we saw last time.

During a White House event with Inter Miami, President Trump made notable remarks about Cuba, saying that once the current focus on Iran is resolved, developments regarding Cuba would be “just a question of time.” He also praised Marco Rubio and suggested Cuba could become a future policy focus. No specific actions or policies were announced, but the comments have drawn attention given ongoing speculation about potential US moves toward the Cuban government.

I'm hearing a lot of noise of a supposed transitional government being negotiated between the US and Cuba, said transition would be coordinated by Alejandro Castro Espín, son of Raul Castro.
None of this has been confirmed by any trusted news sources and its barely speculations but I've heard it from about 3 different people on the internet. Additional to these claims I've read that the communist regime would flee to Russia and free elections would be established in less than a year.
